On July 14, 1974, Stockton North Church of the Nazarene opened its doors for its inaugural service. Three pastors, graduates of Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, and their families were chosen to begin this new church.
Wayne Folmer of Redwood City, California, Carl Hensen of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Russell Powell of Richmond, Indiana, were privileged to be a part of a unique team ministry…the first of its kind in the Church of the Nazarene.
The little church, purchased for $40,000 in 1974 by the Sacramento District Church of the Nazarene, was gifted to the fledgling congregation. Nestled in the trees of a walnut orchard, the young church grew rapidly.
In the mid 1970’s the church changed its name to Delta Church of the Nazarene. By 1977, Pastor Wayne Folmer remained as the only pastor.
In the early 1990s, church board members recognized we were outgrowing our Hammer Lane facility and could not expand into the walnut orchard surrounding our property.
We explored every possible location in North Stockton that would serve as a new location for our church, including a 16-acre site on Lower Sacramento Road – a site that was once Doc and Charlie’s recreation area and batting cages.
While visiting the site, and kneeling to pray, God spoke to Pastor Wayne…
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
Delta Nazarene closed escrow on the 16-acre property on Lower Sacramento Road in December 1998, built a new church, and change its name to Horizon Christian Fellowship Church of the Nazarene. On October 16, 2005, we opened our doors for our first service at Horizon Christian Fellowship on Lower Sacramento Road.
In June 2014, Pastor Wayne (semi) retired after 40 years of ministry in Stockton California and is currently serving as a Care Pastor and oversees Senior Ministries.
Pastor Wayne and Dorcas have taught us, lead us, baptized us, married us, counseled us, sat by our side at the hospital, prayed for us, watched us grow in our walk with Christ.
Thank you, Pastor Wayne & Dorcas, for leaving us a Legacy of Love and for teaching us about Christ.
